Cinemas, Theatres and Clubs

The story of Drama, Music and Performance in Goole

Introduction

“Am off t’club, tha’s a ton on t’neet...”

How did you entertain yourself before the internet, online streaming or film channels? You had the choice of watching what was on the TV (with a selection of two or three channels), reading a book or going out... but where to go? Should you go to the cinema, the theatre or see a turn at the local club? This exhibition explores the story of entertainment in Goole and how, on any one night of the week, you could be going to see Greased Lightening at the cinema, laughing with Lenny Henry at the BRSA Club, or singing the night away with the Troggs at The Vikings pub.

This exhibition was created by Stephen Walker on behalf of Goole Civic Society, in collaboration with Goole Museum. Stephen is the Trustee of the Society, a local historian, and a building conservation officer. Stories of the clubs and cinemas and the Acts who performed in Goole are based upon the memories of Stephen’s father, Michael Walker.
