Description

Welcome to East Riding Archives

East Riding Archives and Local Studies offers you the chance to access the extensive and unique archives collection (dating from 1129 to present) based at the Treasure House. We collect the written and photographic heritage of the East Riding, its communities and its people. We preserve this unique collective memory for present and future generations. We encourage and support the use of our collections by everyone for research, learning and enjoyment. Viewing original archives is free to everyone, however there are charges for making copies for personal research. Find out about booking a seat, viewing items in the research room and prices in our Using the Archives section.

Using the Archives

Accredited service

East Riding Archives has been awarded Accredited Archive Status from The National Archives. This ensures the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of the country’s archival heritage. Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of the delivery of archive service.

Achieving accredited status shows that East Riding Archives has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing; the care of its unique collections; and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

The Accreditation Panel from The National Archives which made the award "congratulated the service on working well across the Accreditation standard and on its level of achievement throughout. This strong performance represented a good service to the people of the East Riding, and a significant investment in their collections".

Secondary Description

Volunteer with East Riding Archives

Volunteers are a valuable part of the East Riding Archives team, helping us surface clean documents, making up folders or sleeves in the conservation workshop, helping to creating an index of obituaries and notices, adding details to our catalogue and more.

There is no payment for volunteer work but you will get:

  • 25% discount in the Treasure House cafe
  • reimbursement of travel expenses
  • training in the jobs we ask you to do
  • new skills to add to your CV

What skills do I need?

All you need is plenty of enthusiasm and an interest for supporting local heritage. Working in the conservation workshop you will need to handle fragile archives with great care. For other tasks, you will need to be able to use a computer.

Current opportunities

There are general opportunities available to help with cataloguing items, but we also have two specific projects: An oral history project called Times of Old Re-Told, where we are collecting people’s experiences of the past. There is also the Trawling Through Time project. Find out more on the Archives Online page.
